[Interview] Molotovcatnip

Next up in my cosplayer interviews is Molotovcatnip, a talented cosplayer from Leicester. You can find her on Facebook and Tumblr.

What inspired you to start cosplaying? Fighting Dreamers Pro inspired me, I was going through my Naruto phase and they were the first cosplayers I ever found, and I fell in love with it completely. It took me a few years after that to actually start cosplaying, but now that I have, I've never looked back!

What about people who inspire you - do you have any cosplay 'idols'?
Like I said before, FDP are definitely my Idols, also Jessica Nigri, Twinzik and Parle Productions. I really admire how they're all different in their styles and execution, they've really stood out to me over the years as individual cosplayers that are good at what they do and truly enjoy the hobby~

How long have you been cosplaying?

I've been cosplaying for around 3 years now, but I've only been serious about it for a year or so.

What has been your most memorable moment?
Probably when I was cosplaying Jack Frost, It was the first cosplay I did that got pretty popular. I was on my way to Birmingham MCM in November 2013, and we had to walk through the bull ring centre and we walked past a group of kids and their parents, and so many of the kids came over to me or were yelling "Jack Frost! It's Jack Frost!" it was so nice! There was another time on the way to ALcon as Jack again and a little girl came over, and she just asked "Jack Frost?" to which I asked her if she could see me, and her smile was the biggest I'd ever seen before. It was genuinely the best reaction to a cosplay ever.

What are your upcoming convention & cosplay plans?
My next convention is Manchester MCM where I'll be a Punk version of Poison Ivy, me and some friends have a Girl Gang Gotham Sirens group planned. After that I have ALcon, October MCM, and November MCM!

What has been your favourite costume to make/wear so far?
Ah, again, definitely Jack Frost, or maybe Elizabeth. Both got a lot of love and I felt really nice and comfortable in each cosplay!

What would be your dream cosplay?I have many dream cosplays, two big ones are Ruby Moon from CCS and Princess Peach. I'll actually be doing Princess Peach for October MCM this year!

You cosplayed Ash Ketchum at MCM Expo, how hard was that costume to make? Why did you choose to cosplay him?
The cosplay itself was actually really easy. But I was bad and left it until around 2 days before... I was actually finishing it in the hotel room the night/morning before when I was supposed to wear it! I decided because me and a good friend of mine, and someone I cosplay a lot of duo's and things with were re-watching Indigo League and we got really hyped on Palletshipping, and it sort of spun out from there.

What advice would you give someone who's just beginning or wanting to try cosplay?I'd say start with something simple, casual or comfortable. Don't dive straight into a big cosplay for your first one unless you're definitely comfortable in your skills/self. It's really easy to get into cosplay! But I find it can also be pretty intimidating, so it's best to ease yourself into the community.

How do you decide on what characters you cosplay?
Usually I see a character or identify with them a lot so I pick based on how it looks and how I feel about the character. I also really love a challenge, so if I see a character with a complicated outfit or wig or makeup, I fall in love instantly.

What has been the most challenging costume for you so far? Probably my Merida. I had an old Hungary from Hetalia dress that was 4 sizes too big, It was the perfect colour for Merida, so I took it apart completely, and re-made it to be a Lolita inspired Merida dress. The wig was somewhat challenging, too. I had two separate orange/ginger wigs that I cut apart and sewed together, and I then used an old rag method to curl it!

What are your favourite series? Have you ever or will you ever cosplay from them? Sailor Moon, CardCaptors, Kill la Kill are my top favourites currently, but my favourite anything ever is Captain America. I guess I'd really love to cosplay from all of them! I actually have plans, and an almost finished Ryuko Matoi cosplay, already.

Why do you cosplay?

I cosplay for the fun, the friends and the conventions. I have met some of my best friends through cosplay, it's honestly my favourite thing to do.

Last question, what's your favourite thing about cosplaying? The reactions from people and meeting new friends! Generally just hanging out with friends at conventions and meets in cosplay, or meeting celebrities and idols through cosplay itself!
